South West Community Chaplaincy | Community Chaplaincy Project

At South West Community Chaplaincy (SWCC), we work across Cornwall, Devon and West Somerset to provide practical, emotional and ongoing support to men and women of all ages before they are released from prison and throughout the crucial first days, weeks and months of their return to the community.

We understand that leaving prison can be both an opportunity and a time of significant uncertainty. Many people want their lives to be different after release but may not know where to begin. They can face multiple challenges, including finding suitable accommodation, accessing employment or education, rebuilding relationships, managing finances and maintaining a life free from drugs and alcohol.

For some, these difficulties have been present throughout their lives. They may never have experienced a safe, stable and supportive environment as children, or may have struggled with education and forming positive relationships. Others may live with low self-esteem, social isolation or dependency issues, making it difficult to see a positive future.

Our community chaplains and dedicated volunteers provide compassionate, non-judgemental mentoring and practical assistance tailored to each individual's needs. We build trusted relationships, listen to people's concerns and help them take positive steps towards stability, independence and a fresh start.

Our support can begin before release, helping people prepare for the challenges ahead, and continues in the community for as long as it is needed. We work alongside individuals to identify their goals, overcome barriers and recognise their strengths and potential.

Community Chaplaincies like SWCC play an important role in helping people begin to value their lives and believe that change is possible. By offering consistent support, encouragement and practical guidance, we help people build the confidence and skills they need to make positive choices, strengthen their relationships and create a more secure future.

Through this work, we aim to support successful resettlement, reduce the risk of reoffending and promote lasting, positive change. Most importantly, we help people recognise that their past does not have to define their future—and that with the right support, a fresh start is possible.
